The Hague, April 5, 2024 – The Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management (I&W), in collaboration with NL Space Campus, Netherlands Space Office (NSO), and Rijkswaterstaat, is organising the first edition of the Geo-Data Fusion Hackathon focused on solving policy challenges with satellite data. Participating teams get a chance to receive an order of €10,000 to €20,000 for further development of the solution.
Application of Satellite Data
The GEO-DATA FUSION HACKATHON is a public hackathon exploring and utilising the possibilities of satellite data for societal challenges. This three-day hackathon will take place on June 13-14 and 17, 2024, at LEF, Utrecht. The Finale will be supplemented with a live stream that can be viewed collectively at the ministry on June 17 and online.
The hackathon distinguishes itself by focusing on the use of satellite data in conjunction with other data sources for current societal and policy-related issues. It emphasises the value of satellite data within government domains and encourages collaboration across various sectors and disciplines. The best solution(s) from participating teams will get the opportunity to receive up to €20,000 for a pilot project with the Ministry of I&W, under guidance of NSO.Â

Innovation through Satellite Data: Impactful Challenges
The hackathon focuses on three specific challenges essential to the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management and Rijkswaterstaat:
- Parking in Perspective: Utilising satellite data for accurate parking counts on public parking lots and increasing awareness of the impact of parked vehicles.Â
- Soil Monitoring at High Altitudes – Caring for the Future: A better understanding of soil quality to ensure, among other things, food supply, water management, and carbon storage for future generations.
- Wind Turbines in the North Sea – Impact on Ecology: Quantifying the impact of offshore wind farms on the North Sea using remote sensing techniques.
These challenges are aimed at space data-related solutions, inviting entrepreneurs, academics, developers, data scientists, innovators, and others to contribute and provide insights.Â
Funding Opportunity Process and Development of the PrototypeÂ
During the hackathon, you will be meeting with experts and the challenge owners of RWS, I&W, NSO and NLSC. The data of I&W and RWS that is to be used will be provided at the location itself, in hard drive format and downloadable format. Den Haag, 5 april 2024 – Het Ministerie van Infrastructuur en Waterstaat (I&W), in samenwerking met NL Space Campus, Netherlands Space Office (NSO) en Rijkswaterstaat, organiseert de eerste editie van de Geo-Data Fusion Hackathon gericht op het oplossen van beleidsuitdagingen met satellietdata. Deelnemende teams maken kans op een opdracht ter waarde van €10.000 tot €20.000 voor verdere ontwikkeling van de oplossing.
Toepassing van Satellietgegevens
De GEO-DATA FUSION HACKATHON is een openbare hackathon die de mogelijkheden van satellietgegevens voor maatschappelijke uitdagingen verkent en benut. Deze driedaagse hackathon zal plaatsvinden op 13-14 en 17 juni 2024, in LEF, Utrecht. De finale op 17 juni wordt aangevuld met een livestream die collectief kan worden bekeken op het kantoor van het Ministerie van I&W en online.
De hackathon onderscheidt zich door zich te concentreren op het gebruik van satellietgegevens in combinatie met andere gegevensbronnen voor actuele maatschappelijke en beleidsgerelateerde vraagstukken. Het benadrukt de waarde van satellietgegevens binnen overheidsdomeinen en stimuleert samenwerking tussen diverse sectoren en disciplines. De beste oplossing(en) van de deelnemende teams krijgen de kans om tot €20.000 te ontvangen voor een pilotproject met het Ministerie van I&W, onder begeleiding van NSO.
Innovatie door Satellietgegevens: Impactvolle Uitdagingen
De hackathon concentreert zich op drie specifieke uitdagingen die relevant zijn voor het Ministerie van Infrastructuur en Waterstaat en Rijkswaterstaat:
- Parkeren in Perspectief: Het gebruik van satellietdata voor accurate parkeertellingen op openbare parkeerplaatsen en het vergroten van bewustzijn over geparkeerde voertuigen.
- Bodem Monitoring op Grote Hoogte: Zorg Voor De Toekomst: beter zicht op bodemkwaliteit om onder andere voedselvoorziening, waterhuishouding en CO2-opslag ook voor de volgende generaties veilig te stellen.
- Windturbines Op De Noordzee – Impact Op De Omgeving: Het kwantificeren van de impact van windmolenparken op de ecologie van de Noordzee met behulp van remote sensing technieken.
Deze uitdagingen zijn gericht op spacedata-gerelateerde oplossingen en nodigen ondernemers, academici, ontwikkelaars, datawetenschappers, innovators en anderen uit om bij te dragen en inzichten te bieden.
Financieringsmogelijkheden en ontwikkeling van het prototype
Tijdens de hackathon, zult u experts en challenge owners van RWS, I&W, NSO en NLSC ontmoeten. De gegevens van I&W en RWS die worden aangeboden, worden ter plaatse verstrekt, in harde-schijf-formaat en downloadbaar formaat. Meer informatie over intellectueel eigendom, type gegevens en het formaat van het pilotproject zal binnenkort worden gedeeld op de website van de hackathon.
