ASTRAIOS Webinar Series Continues with New Expert Sessions on EO, AI, and Space-Based Technologies

The ASTRAIOS Webinar Series is back with a new line-up of expert-led sessions designed to address key knowledge and skills gaps in the space sector. Organised under the ASTRAIOS Knowledge Hub, the series focuses on practical applications of Earth Observation (EO), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and space-based technologies across different domains.

The next session will take place on 14 May 2025, featuring:

Uncontrolled Illegal Mining and Garimpo in the Brazilian Amazon
Speaker: Luiz Cortinhas, CTO at Solved โ€“ Geoinformation Solutions

This webinar will present a deep learning approach to mapping industrial and artisanal mining activity in the Brazilian Amazon. Using a U-Net-based convolutional neural network trained on 37 years of annual Landsat mosaics (1985โ€“2022), the model achieved 99% overall accuracy and identified a tenfold increase in detected mining areas, with a notable rise in artisanal mining.

The presentation will also highlight a modified U-Net model with 30 percent fewer trainable parameters, offering a scalable solution for delivering reliable, up-to-date data in support of environmental monitoring and planning.
