In many of the worldโ€™s most vulnerable areas, reliable data on where people access clean water or how waste is managed is simply missing. This data gap makes it incredibly difficult for organizations to plan and deliver effective aid.

But what if we could use satellite imagery to fill this data gap?

KickstartAI is proud to partner with The Netherlands Red Crossโ€™ data and digital team, 510 for a hands-on mini-hackathon focused on this very challenge. Weโ€™re bringing together creative minds to explore how freely available satellite imagery can be used to support humanitarian action.

Is this for you?
This hackathon is designed for problem-solvers from diverse backgrounds. We believe the best ideas come from collaboration, and we strongly encourage you to join if you are a:

  • Data scientist or machine learning engineer interested in applying your skills to satellite imagery and humanitarian challenges.

  • GIS or Remote Sensing Specialist who understands geospatial data and its applications.

  • Humanitarian and environmental professionals who can provide crucial real-world context and insights.

Whatโ€™s on the agenda?
This hackathon invites participants to explore how satellite images could help:

  • Locate and monitor water points (wells, tanks, or taps) to support WASH planning.

  • Identify signs of poor waste management or pollution, such as reflective plastics or dumpsites visible on bare ground.

In mixed teams, participants will brainstorm and assess how feasible these ideas are โ€” what data exists, what patterns could be visible from space, what tools or methods might help, and how such insights could support humanitarian or environmental action.

Teams will produce a short concept summary outlining their approach and findings for The Red Cross.

By joining, youโ€™ll gain exposure to satellite data interpretation and humanitarian data challenges, while learning how data science and geospatial tools can make a tangible social impact.

Join us for a day of inspiring collaboration and use your skills to make a real impact.

Seats are limited, so make sure to sign up early!
